Unleashing creative potential - Inject Creativity Live 25th August 2021

25/8/2021

Yet another wonderful show with my colleagues in creativity Tim Kitchen and Jerry Wong, with special presenter Joel Aarons.

Tonight's show was all about fostering creativity by giving learners the tools and foundations they need to explore and develop their own concepts and designs.

Joel provided some excellent examples, both of his students work after exploring the foundational concepts of photography and composition. All of the creative outcomes came from independently developed concepts by the students themselves. Year 4 students, which is astounding when you look at what they created.
Next, Joel did a live demo in Photoshop Mix (curently being redeveloped and merged with Photoshop Fix) where he put his daughter's Book Week Hobbit costume into an actual Hobbit-Hole!

Next, for the Thought Leader segment, Tim shared a selection of his EduTECH presentation on creativity in education, which of course made special mention of the 1 year anniversary of the passing of a titan in Edu-thought, Sir Ken Robinson.

Check out our explorations in the video (embedded above), and check out the Adobe Spark Summary Page I created during the livestream event this evening. :)

Shaping creative expression - Inject Creativity Live 11th August 2021

11/8/2021

Another fabulous episode of Inject Creativity Live, hosted by me and Tim Kitchen from Adobe, with our guy in the chair Jerry Wong keeping the show ticking in the background.

In this episode, we shared some information about Adobe's collaboration with artist Billie Eilish, and shared some updates about the APAC Adobe Education Summit, EduTECH 2021, and the new Adobe Education Exchange (EDEX) course offered in partnership with Khan Academy.

We were joined by Chris Betcher (@betchaboy) and Michelle Dennis (@michelledennis) as our guests for this episode, with wonderful demonstrations from the both of them.

Michelle's segment (15:42 in the video) was based around the use of 3D creation files placed into Adobe Aero to give students the opportunity to create objects and see them, to scale, in a real world environment. Her virtual perfume bottle was placed on a table in the Aero desktop app, and she even gave a bonus little demo on how you can 'tell' the object to behave when it is dropped in to it's virtual environment.

Next, Chris Betcher (35:42 in the video) shared his 5 minute gem with specific and excellent examples of how constructive attitudes towards failure works to kindle creativity, not smother it.

I learned some fabulous examples of how to explain the creative process to naysayers who discount the value of creative experimentation and failure, and thoroughly enjoyed the practical ways that students can be encouraged in their artistic expression. Technology provides us with the opportunities to see our creations expressed in reality, and I love hearing from fellow educational and technology professionals about their perspectives - it is always so inspiring!

Collaboration, co-operation and colleagues-in-learning: Inject Creativity Live 28/07/2021

A very packed episode tonight, featuring not two but FIVE special guests who shared with us global learning, collaboration practices and consideration of the effects of timetabling in modern schools.

First, Tim, Jerry and I celebrated the milestone of 1 million members of the Adobe Education Exchange! A million people accessing inspiration and learning for free - what a milestone!

Next, we were joined by Clara, Craig and Adrian, who shared the exciting things to come from the Global Adobe Education Summit, starting 28th July 2021 (US time). See my Spark Page below for more.
Next, Brett joined us and led a LIVE collaborative teacher-learner experience with suggestions based around the concept of sunrise and using various poetic devices. It was fabulous - check out my summary below, and watch the recording from the 29:20 mark (or linked below in my Spark Page/above in this post).

Next, Paul presented his thoughts about the limiting effects of timetabling in schools, and shared some articles he has posted to the Adobe Education Exchange. He is asking for collaboration, so the links have been added to my Spark summary below.

Reflection: What did I learn from this episode?

There is always space for creativity in learning and under pressure. I had no idea that Brett was going to ask for participation during his segment in the show; I had thought that I would be able to quietly work on my Spark Page summary and take notes in the background while he shared. I was pleasantly surprised by how easily some suggestions came to me. This made me immediately grateful for all of the recreational reading I had done in school and beyond. His choice of theme (sunrise) brought to mind the "rosy-fingered dawns" of Homer, and I was transported back to a simpler, younger time, where I had more space to be creative than adult life often allows. I was very grateful for this exercise - it brought back a lot of wonderful memories of exploring other worlds - thank you Brett!

Autonomy, reflective practice and practical experience in learning - Wednesday 14th July 2021

In tonight's episode... Michelle Dennis joined us and talked about the reflective practice she engaged in when she featured on The Creative Educator podcast series hosted by Tacy Trowbridge from the Global Adobe Education Team. Check it out here: https://edex.adobe.com/the-creative-educator-podcast

Dr Karen Sutherland from the University of the Sunshine Coast spoke to how they renovated their course creation approach, working to avoid the 'talking head effect' and incorporate the use of Adobe Stock when embedding their students into relevant industry positions.
This enables them to learn while studying about the kind of content that they can create to mix and create professional content for real-world clients.

Karen has also observed a positive change to the quality of the content that teaching staff can create, enabling them to increase not just the outputs but the TRUST that students have in their teachers, seeing examples of their own creative projects using the same resources.

Check out her book about Social Media Management here.

Dan Haesler of Cut Through Coaching and Consulting was our thought leader tonight, and his 5 minute gem was all about learner autonomy, and the observed improvements when learners are active participants in their learning, not just 'recipients of knowledge' from those in power around them.

Collaborative design tools and equitable access for learning - Inject Creativity Live 16/06/2021

During this episode, Tim, Jerry and I welcomed Adobe Education Leaders Craig Daalmeijer-Power from TAFE NSW (Xd demo) and Steven Kolber from Brunswick Secondary College in Melbourne (Thought Leader).

This episode we worked to overcome some tech-gremlins which kept bobbing up, impacting both our stream to the Adobe for Education channel and the connectivity of Craig before the show and Steven DURING his presentation. Tim and I had thought on our feet and planned for ways we could cover Craig should he not be able to rejoin the stream, so we really had to start tap-dancing when Craig came back and did his presentation without a hitch... then Steven's internet dropped out mid-presentation!
I am very grateful to have the opportunity to work with such gracious and adaptable Edutech professionals, who adapted quickly and easily to the technical issues we experienced. In the recording, you'll note how Tim and I use Steven's unexpected break in transmission to promote the Adobe Edu Summit for APAC in September. Steven's presentation about equity and practices in the international education sector was really getting interesting as his internet dropped out - hopefully we will have the opportunity to see it in full... perhaps at the APAC Edu Summit?

Craig's presentation on what he and his students do with Adobe Xd was, as always, both interesting and inspiring. I took many, many screenshots to showcase his work during his presentation, but to immerse yourself in the full scope of creativity he employs with his students, you should check out our recording (linked above).

We'll be on a short break, and will be back on the 14th July 2021.

Virtual and augmented reality bytes of learning ;) - Inject Creativity Live 02/06/2021

Tonight's wonderful guests included:
  • Dr Max Schleser from Swinburne University, and
  • Clara Galan, Adobe's Global Education Community Lead

Sadly, we were not joined by Paul McLean as planned (he was under the weather), but Max Schleser filled the time Paul would have been with us with some truly inspiring AR projects in Adobe Aero, and 360 video projects tips and tricks LIVE on screen!
Tonight I learned:
  • I really need to grow an extra pair of arms :) I was captivated by Max's presentation and couldn't help but try out his Aero asset during his demonstration.
Content warning: If you are playing with Max's Aero asset at work or in bed, make sure you turn the speaker volume of your phone down. I just about gave myself a heart attack when I accidentally activated the audio he embedded in his AR project!!! Such a great asset and project, well worth checking out using the QR code in my Spark Page - just don't play in a shared or quiet space without headphones active!
  • Clara is the busiest bee - just her listing off presenters at the Global Adobe in Education Summit had me in awe!
  • If you have a chance, check out her livestream show with Tanya Avrith!

To check out some of my notes from this evening, you can access my Adobe Spark Page with my show summary. To watch tonight's recording back in it's entirety, you can access the video embedded above, or in my Spark Page (below).

The sound of learning and self-determination - Inject Creativity Live 19th May 2021

19/5/2021

Tonight Tim, Jerry and I were joined by Steve O'Neil and Dan Haesler. Steve shared with us some practical skills building in Adobe Audition, where he demonstrated some simple and effective manipulations that can really make sound pop!

Dan shared his thoughts on self-determination and the truly meaningful impact it can have on learning - particularly peer-to-peer learning. He shared a touching anecdote about how student attitudes can completely change when you given them the opportunity and room to explore their skills with others, and place them in the driver seat rather than dictating their experience to them.
I learned tonight that:
  • I really need to start working in Adobe Audition to discover the full range of creative potential - even it if is it to remix some of the hilarious dog-chatter that my dog and his best friend make during their doggy-play-dates (thanks Steve!)
  • Some of the best learning experiences are learner-led
  • Remembering that everyone can't change the world, but anyone can change someone's world (thanks Dan!)

And with those words to live by, I'll sign off - check out my Adobe Spark Page from tonight's episode below, and watch the recording of tonight's episode (in my Spark Page or embedded above)!

Goodnight!

Another fab show is in the bag!

Tonight Tim, Jerry and I were joined by Lauren Sayer, Brett Salakas, Claire Hackett and Tanya Marriott - each serving their own kind of inspirational brain and soul food for the lifelong learner.

I learned tonight that:
  • I still get excited by other people sharing something they find exciting (Lauren Sayer)
  • The breadth and depth of creativity, meaning and engagement that can be generated when creatives reach out through projects and competitions (Tanya Marriott & Claire Hackett)
  • How wonderfully engaging passionately delivered poetry can be (Brett Salakas).
To check out the recording from this evening, watch the video embedded here. You can also check out my Spark Page, summarising our presenters and what they covered this evening, below.

If you're reading this, thanks for checking out my page, and join us live next Wednesday 19th May on the
Adobe for Education YouTube Channel.
